SocksChain Editor's Review
Protect your privacy and identity with this awesome Internet tool.
Internet privacy is one of the most important issues you can concern yourself with when it comes to being online. With all of the identity theft and online fraud issues that are constantly being bumped into, it’s a wonder that anyone still shops or banks online.
In order to protect yourself, one of the best things you can do is to mask your IP (internet protocol) and your identity. One of the best programs you can use to do that with is SocksChain. It’s a proxy masking program for Windows.
SocksChain allows you to work with any Internet service through a chain of SOCKS or HTTP proxies to hide the real IP-address. It functions as a usual SOCKS-server, transmitting queries through a chain of proxies. It can be used with client programs that do not support the SOCKS protocol, but work with one TCP-connection, such as TELNET, HTTP, IRC... (FTP uses 2 connections, in and out). Your IP-address will not be seen in the server's logs or mail headers.
SocksChain pumps your internet traffic through a chain of proxies. SocksChain itself is connected only with the first element of this chain. That one in its turn is connected with the second and so on. Tracking where the start of an internet surfing session began is very complex and difficult. To do that, you have to analyze the logs containing all of all hops (or steps of an internet trip), one by one, in reverse order. If one step is in the chain is missing, the origin cannot be found, and therefore, your traffic is masked. While this can provide you with the security you're looking for, it does affect your surfing speed. The longer the trip, the longer the chain and amount of hops/steps, the slower your internet connection will be.
Pros: Works with Outlook, Outlook Express and Internet Explorer, as well as other popular programs.
Cons: Program support limited Socks compliant, and to specific, applications.
Conclusion: The application is expensive for the benefit that it gives. Its scope of compatibility is limited to either specific applications or to those that specifically make use of Socks. We urge caution when considering a purchase of an application like this one. Other applications on Soft32 provide better compatibility at the same or lower cost.
